tooth sensitivity charlotte ncIf eating hot or cold foods or switching back and forth, causes pain or discomfort in your teeth, you may have sensitive teeth. Tooth sensitivity can be frustrating and make eating and drinking difficult and uncomfortable. If you have been experiencing tooth sensitivity be sure to inform Dr. Richard Van Gurp next time you are at our Charollete, NC dentist office. Sensitive teeth could be an indicator of additional oral health concerns.

What Causes of Tooth Sensitivity?

  • Exposed Dentin: At the core of the tooth is a substance called dentin. Dentin is filled with tiny nerve endings. Enamel covers the dentin and acts as a protective barrier, keeping hot and cold from meeting the nerve endings. Enamel wears away over time for many reasons. Tooth decay, teeth grinding, and years of improper brushing can all wear away at enamel. As the tooth’s enamel begins to wear away the dentin is exposed. Exposed dentin leaves nerve endings exposed to temperature changes causing tooth sensitivity.
  • Gum Recession: Gum recession can also cause teeth to become sensitive or reactive to hot and cold. If the gumline begins to recede or gets pushed back and pulls away from your tooth the root of the tooth becomes exposed. If you notice your gums beginning to pull back, or if they are swollen or bleed frequently, be sure to schedule a visit to our Charollete, NC dentist office as soon as possible. Receding gums may cause tooth sensitivity but it also increases the risk of tooth loss and may be a sign of advanced gum disease.
